About The Last Supper
Leonardo's The Last Supper was painted for the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan in 1495–1498. Christ sits at the center while the apostles respond through varied gestures and expressions. The room's perspective directs attention toward him. Leonardo worked on dry plaster with an experimental technique, rather than using traditional wet-plaster fresco painting.
Look closely
Follow the ceiling and wall lines toward the center. Then compare the groups of apostles: hands, faces and body positions give each group a different emotional rhythm.
