About Liberty Leading the People

Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People responds to the July Revolution of 1830 in France, rather than the Revolution of 1789. A symbolic figure of Liberty carries the tricolor flag above a crowd crossing a barricade. Realistic details and allegory share the same space. The painting belongs to the Louvre and is a central work of French Romanticism.

Look closely

Trace the triangular movement from the bodies in the foreground to the raised flag. Compare the symbolic central figure with the different people moving alongside her.
