About Girl with a Pearl Earring

Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, painted around 1665, is a tronie: a study of a character or expression rather than a conventional commissioned portrait. A turned head, blue-and-yellow head covering and bright earring emerge from a dark ground. The painting belongs to the Mauritshuis in The Hague.

Look closely

Compare the small highlights on the earring and lips with the softly lit face. Notice how few visible details are needed to suggest the jewel.
