The Garden of Palazzo Contarini dal Zaffo

Late 1770s

This painting by Francesco Guardi, an 18th-century landscape painter renowned for his inventive city views, depicts a luxurious Venetian green space. Elegant couples stroll, while a ballgame takes place in the distance and a single gondola slides across the lagoon. Guardi's city scenes were particularly popular with wealthy travelers making the grand tour of Europe as evidence of their extravagant trips.
