About Mona Lisa
Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa brings a seated figure and a distant landscape together through soft transitions of light and shadow. The sitter's folded hands give the portrait a stable base, while the slight smile and turned body make the encounter feel less formal. The painting is held by the Louvre in Paris. Its Italian title, La Gioconda, is another useful name for the same work.
Look closely
Look at the edges of the mouth and eyes, then at the winding paths in the landscape. Notice how Leonardo avoids hard outlines in the face.
