About The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in Saint-Rémy in June 1889. Its village, towering cypress and turbulent sky combine observation with imagination. Blue and yellow carry the scene: bright celestial forms move across the darkness while the houses below seem quiet. This is the 1889 painting in MoMA's collection, distinct from Starry Night over the Rhône.
Look closely
Follow the curves of the sky, then compare them with the upright cypress and church steeple. Where does the painting feel still, and where does it feel restless?
