About Wanderer above the Sea of Fog
Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog places a solitary figure with his back to us above a landscape of mist and rocky peaks. The Hamburger Kunsthalle dates the painting to around 1817. The viewpoint invites us to look with the wanderer while leaving his expression unseen. It is a distinctive example of Romantic landscape painting.
Look closely
Compare the sharply defined foreground rocks with the mountains fading into fog. Ask how the figure changes the scale and emotional character of the landscape.
