About Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat (obverse: The Potato Peeler)

Van Gogh's Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat shows the artist against a pale blue background. Short strokes build the face, beard, hat and clothing into an active surface. The Metropolitan Museum dates the portrait to 1887. Its canvas also carries an earlier painting on the reverse, The Potato Peeler.

Look closely

Compare the direction of strokes in the beard, jacket and background. Notice how warm colors in the face stand out against the cooler blue.
