About The Arnolfini Portrait

Jan van Eyck's The Arnolfini Portrait, dated 1434, places two figures in a richly furnished interior. Tiny details—the dog, chandelier, fruit and convex mirror—reward close viewing. The mirror expands the space beyond the figures facing us.

Look closely

Enlarge the round mirror at the center. Compare what it reflects with the scene in front of it, then notice how carefully light describes the fabric and wooden surfaces.
