Brooklyn Bridge

1899

Although best known for his rural views, Ranger primarliy lived in New York City and was inspired by the urban environment. Here, he recorded a true icon of modernity. Completed in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was still the world's longest suspension bridge when he painted it 16 years later. Yet instead of emphasizing its massive scale or modern construction, Ranger produced a fairly traditional view, integrating the bridge into the landscape.
