About Woman with a Parasol - Madame Monet and Her Son
Monet painted Woman with a Parasol—Madame Monet and Her Son in 1875. His wife Camille and their son Jean appear against an open sky, seen from low on a grassy hillside. Loose strokes suggest wind moving through fabric, clouds and grass. The National Gallery of Art identifies the painting as a celebration of color and light made in an outdoor session.
Look closely
Look at the shadow on the grass and the green underside of the parasol. Compare the direction of the skirt, veil and clouds to see how movement unites the scene.
