About Ophelia

John Everett Millais painted Ophelia in 1851–1852, drawing on the character from Shakespeare's Hamlet. A young woman floats in a stream surrounded by dense plants and flowers. The image joins an intensely observed natural setting with a tragic literary subject. It belongs to Tate Britain and is associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement.

Look closely

Compare the delicate plants along the bank with the stillness of the figure in the water. Look at how the flowers create small bright accents around her dress and hands.
