Approaching Storm

1864

This painting of a beach for middle-class vacationers is by Eugène Boudin, a Norman painter and Claude Monet’s teacher, and exemplifies the artist’s style and subject matter. Monet later followed Boudin’s practice of painting in the open air, the technique that gave this image its vivid spontaneity and atmospheric light. This practice would be particularly important for Monet and his contemporaries, who became known as the Impressionists.
