About A Sunday on La Grande Jatte — 1884

Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte—1884 depicts leisure on an island in the Seine. Small touches of separate colors build people, trees, grass and water into a carefully ordered composition. The title includes 1884, but Seurat developed the large painting over an extended period. This is the finished Art Institute of Chicago painting, rather than one of its many preparatory studies.

Look closely

Enlarge the grass to see the separate points of color. Then step back and watch them combine. Compare the rigid figures with the softer shapes of trees and water.
