About The Bedroom
Van Gogh's The Bedroom shows the room he occupied in the Yellow House in Arles. He painted three versions in 1888–1889; this image is the Art Institute of Chicago's 1889 version. The bed, chairs and pictures are simplified into strong shapes and colors. The unusual perspective gives an ordinary domestic interior a personal, expressive character.
Look closely
Follow the floorboards toward the far wall. Compare the angles of the bed and chairs, and notice how the objects seem to tilt toward the viewer.
