About Las Meninas

Velázquez painted Las Meninas in 1656. The Infanta Margarita stands among members of the Spanish court, while the painter appears beside a large canvas. A mirror at the back reflects the king and queen. The scene makes the viewer consider who is looking, who is being painted and where the observer stands. This reproduction shows the Prado's complete composition.

Look closely

Move from the brightly lit princess to the mirror and open doorway. Each creates a different kind of depth and a different suggestion of someone beyond the visible scene.
