About Impression, Sunrise

Monet's Impression, Sunrise of 1872 depicts the harbor at Le Havre in morning mist. An orange sun and its reflection stand out against blue-gray water, boats and distant industrial structures. Rather than defining every object, Monet suggests a changing atmosphere through loose marks. The painting is in the Musée Marmottan Monet and is closely associated with the name of Impressionism.

Look closely

Compare the orange sun with its broken reflection. Notice how the dark foreground boat anchors a scene whose distant structures almost dissolve into the mist.
