About Irises

Van Gogh's Irises of 1889 shows flowers growing in a garden. Dense leaves and purple blossoms fill much of the composition, with a pale iris providing a striking contrast. The painting belongs to the Getty Museum. It should not be confused with Van Gogh's later vase still lifes of irises, which use the same flower as a different subject.

Look closely

Find the pale iris among the darker blooms. Compare the sweeping leaves with the more irregular shapes of the petals.
