About The Entombment

Rubens's The Entombment presents the body of Christ surrounded by mourners. The overlapping figures and strong changes between light and dark create an intense, close encounter with the subject. The Getty's painting dates to around 1612. It is an example of the emotional and physical immediacy associated with Baroque religious painting.

Look closely

Notice how hands support the body and connect the figures. Compare the pale central form with the darker clothing and surrounding space.
