About Sunflowers
Van Gogh's Sunflowers of 1888 in London's National Gallery is a vase still life dominated by yellows. Flowers at different stages of life create a varied arrangement, from open blossoms to heavy seed heads. Van Gogh painted more than one Sunflowers composition; the date and collection identify the version shown here, distinct from his earlier studies of cut flowers.
Look closely
Compare the petals, centers and drooping flower heads. Notice how many different yellows remain visible even within a painting built around one dominant color.
