About The Scream

Edvard Munch's The Scream turns a landscape into an image of intense unease. A figure stands on a bridge beneath a red-orange sky, while the curved shoreline and bands of color seem to echo the figure's open mouth. Munch made several versions of this subject. This reproduction represents the 1893 version in Norway's National Museum.

Look closely

Compare the straight bridge rails with the bending lines of the sky and shoreline. The contrast helps make the landscape feel as unsettled as the central figure.
