Head of a Philosopher

1758–64

Giandomenico Tiepolo collaborated with his father, Giambattista, on his greatest projects, including the decoration of Madrid's Royal Palace. After his father's death, Giandomenico emerged as a highly original artist adept at depicting popular activities humorously. This is one of a group of philosophers' heads he made in response to a series by his father. The lighter, more dashing work marks a distinct departure from his father’s style.
